Arsenal technical director Edu to play role in recruitment of new women’s head coach

Arsenal technical director Edu is part of the recruitment team working on identifying a replacement for the women’s side after head coach Joe Montemurro confirmed yesterday he was leaving the club at the end of the season.

Montemurro, who has been with Arsenal since 2017, had made the decision in February but only informed the players at training on Wednesday.

During his time at the club, the Australian led Arsenal to the Women’s Super League title in 2019 - as well as four domestic cup finals and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Arsenal are currently sat fourth in the WSL and, with Montemurro leaving on May 31, the club having begun searching for a successor.

Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham is part of that recruitment team, but also technical director Edu will play a role.

Together, along with the management of Arsenal Women and the club’s people director, they will find the ideal candidate, with former United States coach Jill Ellis and ex-Wales manager Jayne Ludlow two who have been linked with the role.

“Ultimately this is a fantastic job,” said Venkatesham. “It’s an opportunity to be the head coach of the most successful women’s team in the country at a time when women’s football is exploding in popularity. So I know we’re going to have a fantastic shortlist of candidates to choose from.”
