Arsenal target Thiago Silva rules out potential move ahead of PSG departure

Thiago Silva has ruled out a move back to boyhood club Fluminense.

The Brazilian centre-back came through the youth ranks at Fluminense before moving elsewhere due to a lack of first-team opportunities.

Yet he returned to the Maracana in 2006 after he changed his mind over a decision to retire from football due to being hospitalised for six months with tuberculosis.

With his contract at PSG set to expire this summer, the 35-year-old's future is the source of much transfer speculation and Arsenal have been one of numerous clubs to have been credited with an interest in him.

There has also been talk of Silva returning to Fluminense, but he says he still wants to play in Europe.

"Everyone knows the affection I have for Fluminense," Silva told Caras.

"They opened their doors to me when I suffered from tuberculosis. I am eternally grateful for this, but I still have goals to reach in Europe."

The news comes on the same weekend that Silva's departure from PSG was officially confirmed.

PSG sporting director Leonardo revealed that both Silva, club captain in the French capital, and record scorer Edinson Cavani will both depart Parc des Princes when their Champions League campaign has been resolved.

However, he also admitted that the duo still had to agree to the short-term contract extensions that would allow them to stay at the club to compete in the proposed August dates of the Champions League.

"It was a difficult decision to make - they are players who made their mark on the club's history," Leonardo told Le Journal du Dimanche.

"The stories were so beautiful. But, yes, we are coming to the end.

"We had to make a logical decision.

"Maybe we are wrong, I do not know - there is never a perfect moment.

"Now the Champions League is still in sight, and the idea is to continue competing with them until the end of August.

"How it can be done is not yet clear."
