Arsenal target explains why he snubbed Gunners to complete £22m transfer

Lyon defender Joachim Andersen said the lure of playing Champions League football was one of the main reasons why he chose the French side over Arsenal this summer.

Andersen, who signed from Sampdoria, was initially being linked with a move to the Gunners along with his then-teammate Dennis Praet, with reports that a £43m bid for the pair from Arsenal was rejected.

In the end nothing materialised, and Praet signed for Leicester while Andersen made the move to France.

Speaking to Foot Mercato Andersen admitted that although Arsenal were an interesting proposition, Lyon in the end made the most tempting offer.

"There were good clubs, but Lyon was the best choice for me," he said. "I wanted to develop as a player, play the Champions League, be in a top team that fights for the title and Lyon was the best solution."

Andersen has slotted straight into the first-team at Lyon, playing in all three of their Ligue 1 matches this season, with the side having won two and lost one so far.

The Gunners did end up strengthening at the back with moves for Kieran Tierney from Celtic and David Luiz from Chelsea , but at the time Andersen was seen as a suitable player to shore up the defence, and it was a disappointment to manager Unai Emery when his move to Lyon was confirmed in July.

Praet, meanwhile, has yet to play a full 90 minutes for Leicester, but came off the bench in their 1-1 draw against Chelsea and started their 2-1 win over Sheffield United last weekend before coming off after 64 minutes.

Arsenal's next match is a huge north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday, with the Gunners looking to get back to winning ways following the disappointment of their 3-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.
