Arsenal 'table £10.5m bid' for Argentina defender as Unai Emery makes transfer move

Arsenal are reportedly close to signing defender Walter Kannemann in a £10.5million deal.

According to CalcioMercato , the Gunners have tabled a bid for the Gremio defender and are looking to bring him from Brazil to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old is viewed as one of South America's top defenders and having won five caps for Argentina he could be given his big break in European football.

With Emery looking to bolster his side on a budget, Kannemann could represent a shrewd piece of business if he can adapt to the Premier League.

The Gunners are said to be battling with Sampdoria for Kannemann's signature in a bid to strengthen their much-criticised defence.

Emery's side conceded 51 goals this season as they missed out on the Premier League top four.

But they have secured a spot in the Europa League final in Baku on May 29, where a win over Chelsea could give them a back door route back into the Champions League.

Qualifying for the elite European competition could provide a boost for their budget and enable them to table bids for further targets.

But the addition of Kannemann is unlikely to break the bank regardless of their result in Azerbaijan and would provide a much-needed extra option defensively.

The Argentinian arrived at Gremio from Mexican side Atlas three years ago and has established himself as a star performer, helping them win the Copa Libertadores in 2017.

Gremio are said to be considering the proposal from Arsenal with a view to making an official response in the coming days.
