Arsenal sweating over injured duo ahead of Leeds United showdown

Mikel Arteta is sweating over the fitness of key duo Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney ahead of Arsenal's clash with Leeds on Sunday.

Midfielder Partey suffered an injury and was taken off during the 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa last Saturday.

Arteta confirmed the Ghanaian has sustained a muscle complaint in his post-match interview and refused to put a timescale on his return.

Meanwhile, left-back Tierney has missed Arsenal's last five games in all competitions with a calf strain.

Worryingly for Arteta, neither Partey nor Tierney took part in the Gunners' midweek training session to prepare for the visit of Leeds.

But the news is not entirely bleak, as various reports claim both players are nearing returns to fitness.

Partey's thigh complaint is not believed to be serious and there is still hope he could feature against Marcelo Bielsa's side.

Moreover, Tierney has reportedly recovered from the worst of his calf injury and the main concern surrounding the Scotland international is his level of fatigue.

While they were nowhere to be seen in the latest training pictures Arsenal have released, it is also possible Partey and Tierney were taking part in individual sessions away from the cameras.

It would come as a major boost to Arteta if the pair can feature in some capacity against Leeds, as the Gunners are desparate for a win after consecutive defeats by Wolves and Villa.

Alongside Tierney and Partey, the Gunners are without goalkeeper Bernd Leno and defender David Luiz, both of whom are suspended after their sendings off against Wolves.

Recent poor results have put an end to Arsenal's seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, which saw them rise from 15th to the top half of the table.

Their upcoming opponents, Leeds, are in fine form with three wins in their last four games, and sit one place above Arsenal in 10th.
