Arsenal supporters noticed what Per Mertesacker did in training ahead of Standard Liege clash

Per Mertesacker is back in the Arsenal first-team fold.

The former defender, who retired from football at the end of the 2017/2018 season, has been assisting interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg following the sacking of Unai Emery last month.

He's been in the dugout for games against Norwich City, Brighton and Hove Albion as well as West Ham United in recent weeks and will do the same for this evening's Europa League tie away at Standard Liege.

It would appear that the German is enjoying his current role before going back to his actual job as Arsenal Academy manager.

But him being with the first-team squad has it's benefits for the club's youngsters.

The likes of Tyreece John-Jules, Robbie Burton, Zech Medley and James Olayinka were all present during Wednesday's training session at London Colney and could be involved against Liege.

And Ljungberg doesn't think it's a risky strategy with the Gunners not yet assured of a place in the round of 32.

"We have a few injuries, and we've played a lot of games lately," he told reporters at his pre-match conference . "We have another game (against Manchester City) on Sunday.

"But we've brought a lot of firepower here, we have younger players here who have played earlier in the group stages, not just now.

"They've been playing the whole time.

"So it's a big game and we're here to get a result. We have a lot of respect for the opponents."

But Ljungberg decision to call up several wonderkids wasn't the hot topic amongst some Arsenal fans.

Rather it was what happened around the 3.50 mark in the YouTube video uploaded by Hayters , where Mertesacker goes for a sprint.

One Arsenal fan commented: "I can see Per hasn't lost his pace after retirement," and another said: "Per was always the Fastest in Training,", but perhaps the best response was: "watch Mertesacker demonstrating mad pace at 3:50!!!"
