Arsenal suffer fresh injury blow in defence to raise stakes over Pablo Mari transfer deal

Arsenal are into the fifth round of the FA Cup as they came out as 2-1 winners against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

First-half goals from Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah gave the Gunners a 2-0 lead going into half-time of the fourth-round clash as Portsmouth at Fratton Park waited for the winners of the tie.

However, things didn't all go to plan for Mikel Arteta's men, with a second-half injury to defender Shkodran Mustafi meaning that he had to be stretched from the pitch to be replaced by Rob Holding.

At first glance, it looks as if the German will miss at least a few weeks of action for the Gunners, meaning that Arteta will be short on defensive options.

David Luiz will be back in contention after serving his one-game ban against the Cherries after being shown a red card against Chelsea last week.

However, despite the Brazilian's availability, the injury still leaves Arteta with limited options in Arsenal's backline.

Calum Chambers is out for the rest of the season injured, leaving just Sokratis, Holding and Luiz as the central options for the head coach.

Luckily for Arteta there is still a few days of the January transfer window remaining, meaning that the Gunners will be able to dip into the transfer market.

Names such as Pablo Mari, Dayot Upamecano and Mykola Matviyenko have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

and the Arsenal boss has said that there is still some active targets ahead of deadline day.

"We are in the market and the club is trying to facilitate one or two bodies if we can with the resources that we have in this window," he told BT Sport.

Mustafi's injury against Bournemouth may just mean that Arsenal push that little bit harder for a centre back target.
