Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang confirmed as new club captain, says Unai Emery

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been named Arsenal’s new club captain after Granit Xhaka was stripped of the armband.

Gunners boss Unai Emery confirmed on Tuesday that Xhaka was no longer part of his leadership group, after his altercation with home fans during the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last month.

The Swiss international has not played for the club since, missing the Carabao Cup penalty shootout loss against Liverpool and the 1-1 Premier League draw with Wolves.

Aubameyang skippered the side in the Wolves game in Xhaka’s absence, scoring his 50th goal for the club.

Emery hinted after the game that the Gabon striker could take the job on a full-time basis, and has now made that decision official.

Aubameyang was already one of Emery’s five designated captains, alongside Xhaka, Alexandre Lacazette, Hector Bellerin and Mesut Ozil.

He has been rested for Wednesday’s Europa League meeting with Vitoria, meaning Bellerin is likely to deputise.
