Arsenal still to confirm Freddie Ljungberg's role under Mikel Arteta amid shock Malmo job offer

Swedish side Malmo are in contact with Freddie Ljungberg as they look to make the Arsenal interim boss their new head coach, according to reports from Sweden.

Sportal.se report that Ljungberg is open to a return to his homeland to take the reigns of the club, who are seeking a replacement for Uwe Rosler after he left a week ago.

Mikel Arteta's appointment at Arsenal will have consequences for Ljungberg, who returned to North London last summer as Unai Emery's assistant.

He then stepped up following the Spaniard's dismissal and remains very highly-rated within the club, despite being able to lead to an immediate upturn in results.

While football.london understand that Arsenal want to keep Ljungberg as part of Arteta's staff, the opportunity to earn first-team managerial experience could be difficult for hiim to turn down.

Daniel Andersson, Malmo's director of sports, is said to have a good relationship with Ljungberg, and the club is located close to Almstad, where he began his playing career.

Arsenal thanked Ljungberg for his efforts as interim head coach in Arteta's confirmation as Arsenal's new boss, but pointedly did not state whether the former Under-23s boss would be staying on as part of Arteta's backroom staff.

"I also want to thank Freddie Ljungberg for skilfully guiding us through the last three weeks," Arsenal director Josh Kroenke stated. "He stepped up at short notice and has helped us through this difficult period with great professionalism."

Head of football Raul Sanllehi said: "I must also pay tribute to Freddie Ljungberg for his hard work and leadership.

"Together with Per Mertesacker, he has done a vital job for us in difficult circumstances. Freddie and Per are important parts of the Arsenal family and care deeply for this club."
