Arsenal 'step up pursuit' of Liverpool free transfer as defender blow emerges

Arsenal continue to deal with the fallout of Sunday's shock FA Cup defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest, which has intensified the need for January activity.

Mikel Arteta's side are lacking significant depth in a number of areas, which was highlighted in a lacklustre display at the City Ground.

One of those areas is central midfielder where, as it stands, Albert Sambi Lokonga is the only fit, senior and available player in this position, so it's unsurprising to see a midfield target top of the agenda.

A number of names have been touted for a move to the Emirates Stadium and Paris Saint-Germain's Georginio Wijnaldum is among them, with Fichajes stating the Gunners are stepping-up their pursuit.

The former Liverpool midfielder has struggled to cement regular first-team football in the French capital since moving on a free transfer from Anfield last summer and is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League.

Newcastle United, one of Wijnaldum's former clubs, are also in the hunt but it's suggest Arsenal are ready to offer as much as €20million (£16.7million) to seal a deal.

Elsewhere, Arsenal's hopes of offloading Cedric Soares this month appear to have suffered a blow as AS states that Atletico Madrid are eyeing Valencia's Daniel Wass.

Soares has been touted as a replacement in the Spanish capital for Kieran Trippier but it seems both a permanent and temporary exit for the Portuguese full-back is off the table.

Finally, TNT Sports states that Arsenal are among three European sides to have made an approach to sign Palmieras midfielder Danilo Oliveira, alongside Lille and Monaco.

However, with the Club World Cup in February, Palmieras are adamant that any deal would only see the player move in the summer.
