Arsenal stars were "p*****" when they beat Man Utd, admits former Gunner

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has claimed the Gunners once put Manchester United to the sword - despite being 'p*****'.

Campbell was part of the Arsenal squad that won the First Division title in 1991, losing just once over the course of the campaign.

Campbell was particularly prominent in the run-in, scoring nine times in 12 matches ahead of the visit of Manchester United in the penultimate match of the season.

Title rivals Liverpool were in action earlier in the day and had to win to keep their hopes alive, but were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest.

And that meant Arsenal were champions and the celebrations began, before they had even kicked a ball.

"Nottingham Forest had beaten Liverpool 2-1, we were at the golf club watching the game," Campbell told Undr The Cosh podcast.

"We were driving to Highbury, and the fans were partying because we had already won the league.

"We were playing Manchester United that night. All the lads filled the Lucozade bottles with beers and champagne and George Graham didn't know.

"All the lads were going down, the physio was coming on and we were having a drink.

"We ended up winning 3-1. Alan Smith scored three and it was party time.

"We basically played p***** because we had already won it."

Campbell spent four more seasons in north London before joining Nottingham Forest in 1998.

He also enjoyed spells with Everton , West Brom and Cardiff during his career before retiring in 2007 at the age of 37.
