Arsenal star will sign new deal this summer on one condition

Arsenal want Stephan Lichtsteiner to stay at the Emirates - but he needs assurances before pen is put to paper.

A deal is on the table to keep the 35-year-old Switzerland international at the club.

But he has yet to tell them if he will sign it, or if he will be seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Lichtsteiner explained to Swiss publication Neue Zurcher Zeitung that he must find out if he is in Unai Emery's plans before saying yes.

He doesn't want to be a squad player after only starting only eight Premier League games this season.

"This will need time," he said. “The fact that I play at a top club at the age of 35 says enough.

“There have been talks. We have to see if it suits both sides.

Arsenal 'identify two possible Aaron Ramsey replacements'

“I want to play on a regular basis ahead of Euro 2020 but if the manager doesn’t rely on me then I’ll need to consider my future.”

Emery has preferred to play Ainsley Maitland-Niles in front of Lichtsteiner in the long-term absence of Hector Bellerin.

The manager wants to bring in three new faces this summer as he continues his Arsenal squad rebuild.

Aaron Ramsey has signed a pre-contract agreement with  Juventus  and another midfielder is top of his wish-list.

The Gunners boss is also chasing extra creativity to his ranks as they look to push on in his second season.

But Emery has just £45million to spend this summer - and reports suggest they have already decided against making Denis Suarez's move from Barcelona permanent.

Arsenal's next game is at home to Newcastle on April 1, before they travel to Everton six days later.

They then face Napoli in the first leg of the Europa League quarter final.
