Arsenal star Kieran Tierney return date hint as Scotland boss provides Moldova fitness hope

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke is convinced that Kieran Tierney will overcome his injury at Arsenal to feature for the national team next week.

The Muirhouse man missed Arsenal's win at Leicester City at the weekend with an ankle problem but Clarke has named him in his Scotland squad regardless.

A match with Moldova in World Cup 2022 qualifying next Friday is pivotal for Clarke's team, with victory enough to seal progression to a play-off place next March. Denmark at Hampden rounds off the nation's qualifying campaign.

The Hampden head coach hopes Tierney will play for Arsenal this weekend against Watford, but even if he doesn't, he's sure of his international fitness.

“I think Kieran will be on the plane and if he’s on the plane, he’ll be fit,” Clarke said.

“That’s my opinion but look, you have to respect the club and the club are telling us he’s working his way back to fitness.

“They’re hopeful he could be involved this weekend [against Watford] but if he [only] gets a few days training in, then fine.

"We don’t play until a week on Friday, so he’s got time on his side. I expect that Kieran will be fit.”
