Arsenal star Granit Xhaka issues injury update ahead of crucial Newcastle clash

Granit Xhaka has vowed to do all he can to return to full fitness ahead of Arsenal's crucial season run-in after being forced off injured while in action for Switzerland on Wednesday night.

The Gunners midfielder had inspired the Swiss into a 3-0 lead against Denmark in their Euro 2020 qualifier, scoring his side's second goal in typically spectacular sytle.

But he had to be replaced 11 minutes from time after complaining of a thigh problem and having left the pitch he had to watch on as Denmark staged an incredible comeback, scoring three times in the final six minutes to snatch a 3-3 draw.

Explaining why he substituted Xhaka after the game, Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic said: "Xhaka could not stay on the pitch," Petkovic said. "He asked me ten minutes before to be replaced.

"Granit had adductor problems, he could not do any more."

Xhaka himself has now taken to social media to deliver an update on his injury, having arrived back in England on Thursday afternoon.

The midfielder said: "Back in London but still unhappy that we didn’t secure the three points in the EURO qualifiers against Denmark.

"It is always painful not to be able to go the full distance but I pushed myself as hard as I could until I had to ask for my substitution in the 79th minute.

"After not being able to finish the match fighting with my teammates, I will have the first treatment tonight [Thursday] to make sure to recover quickly."

Arsenal return to Premier League action on Monday night when they host Newcastle United at the Emirates.

Unai Emery's side currently sit fourth with eight games remaining and the Spaniard will be well aware of the need to have his top players fit for the run-in as the Gunners attempt to secure Champions League football for the first time in three years.

In other injury news, both Sokratis and Sead Kolasinac featured during Greece's game with Bosnia on Tuesday and showed no signs of the injuries that had kept them out of matches over the weekend.

Unai Emery is expected to give an update on the fitness of Nacho Monreal, who sat out Arsenal's warm weather training camp in Dubai, during his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Unai Emery's work at Arsenal has been undervalued, misunderstood and he deserves more credit
