Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe ruled out of England U21 game at last minute due to illness

Emile Smith Rowe has been ruled out of England Under-21's opening European Championship qualifier against Kosovo in Milton Keynes this evening due to a non-covid related illness.

The attacking midfielder had been expected to start Lee Carsley's first game in charge of the team but was ruled out earlier today.

It is hoped that he will be passed fit in time for Arsenal's Premier League game against Norwich City on Saturday.

A new look England Under-21 are captained by Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi, who is joined in the middle of defence by Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Guehi spoke yesterday of how much of an honour and privilege it was to be given the armband while opening up on his £18m transfer from Chelsea, whom he had joined as a seven year old, having decided following discussions with his family that the time was right to pursue regular top flight football.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is spending the campaign on loan at Selhurst Park, is lining up on the left of a midfield three featuring Tottenham Hotspur's Oliver Skipp and James Garner, of Manchester United but on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal pair Folarin Balogun and Tyreece John-Jules are on the bench along with Valentino Livramento, who joined Southampton from Chelsea in search of regular senior minutes this summer.

Carsley, a former Everton midfielder who has risen steadily up the ranks of England underage teams, is being assisted by former Chelsea and Arsenal left back Ashley Cole.
