Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe in England Under-21s squad for Euros group stage

Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe has been rewarded for his breakthrough season by being named in the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship finals.

The playmaker, 20, has represented England at every level from U-16 to U-20, and impressed again as Arsenal beat Tottenham 2-1 in Sunday's north London derby, hitting the bar with a curling effort.

The tournament will see the group stage and knockouts held separately, with England due to face Switzerland, Portugal and Croatia in Slovenia over six days from March 25.

Among those included in Aidy Boothroyd's 23-man group are two players with senior England experience in Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, while Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah, who holds the England U-21 scoring record with 16 goals in 14 matches, also makes the cut.

Greenwood is back in the England fold for the first time since being sent home by Gareth Southgate after inviting a woman to England’s team hotel in Iceland last September.

West Brom's Josh Griffiths and PSV's Noni Madueke – a former Tottenham academy player – are also included for the first time, while Spurs's Japhet Tanganga will be hoping for a first cap.

Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Spurs's Ryan Sessegnon are the only survivors from the 2019 finals, with Sessegnon joined in the squad by twin brother Steven.

The knockout phase to be jointly hosted by Hungary and Slovenia from May 31 to June 6.
