Arsenal star Aubameyang baffled as VAR 'misses' Alexander-Arnold tackle

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has questioned VAR's failure to pick on on a studs-up challenge from Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold during Wednesday night’s meeting between the two sides at the Emirates.

Alexander-Arnold was cautioned for a high tackle on Gunners youngster Bukayo Saka, with referee Paul Tierney not asked to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Arsenal were without striker Eddie Nketiah for the game because he is currently serving a three-game ban, having been sent off for a similar tackle on Leicester’s James Justin last week. On that occasion, he was initially shown a yellow card by referee Chris Kavanagh, who upgraded it to red after watching several replays.

Aubameyang was himself sent off for a VAR-reviewed tackle against Crystal Palace earlier this season, and replied to a picture to Alexander-Arnold’s tackle on Twitter, writing: “WTF didn’t even get the VAR on this one.”

Mikel Arteta’s side came from behind to beat the champions 2-1, thanks in large part to mistakes from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, who gifted goals to Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson.
