Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham deal Premier League sponsorship blow to Newcastle United

A total of 18 Premier League clubs have voted against teams entering commercial arrangements that involve pre-existing business relationships, it has been reported.

The move, backed by London clubs Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, to temporarily ban such deals was voted through by Premier League clubs on Monday by 18-2, The Guardian reports.

Man City were the only club other than Newcastle United to vote in favour of the deals, having signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi government-owned airline Etihad Airways.

After being voted in, the ban will be in force for a month and apply to all Premier League clubs while a working party is set up to look at whether any permanent changes should be made.

Clubs hope the ban will stop Newcastle from gaining an unfair advantage following their Saudi-led takeover earlier this month.

The takeover, by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), has made Newcastle the richest in world football and all eyes are now on what moves the club will make to raise them into the top-tier of clubs in the Premier League.

Boss Steve Bruce is widely expected to be replaced, despite taking charge of his 1,000th game in management in the 3-2 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Bruce has vowed to fight on following Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium finalising its £305million takeover.

The club has also been linked with a host of top names from the world of football with big moves now expected in the transfer market.

But all of this will need to be balanced in the club's accounting books, with sponsorship deals one of the ways they are expected to boost the kitty.
