Arsenal set to provide first update after European Super League announcement

Arsenal will hold a Fans' Forum on Thursday evening to address concerns about the European Super League.

The Gunners confirmed on Monday that they are among the 12 teams to have signed up to the new Super League.

Fellow Premier League 'top six' clubs Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham have also made the move.

However, the news has been met with outrage among supporters, with many suggesting it will tarnish the integrity and tradition of their respective teams due to the lack of meritocracy in the new competition.

Senior officials, including chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and technical director Edu, will attend the Zoom call scheduled for 30 minutes.

football.london understands that the bulk of the first team squad learnt the news on Monday morning, with further reports claiming that Venkatesham spoke to the first team staff about what it would mean for them and why the club had taken the decision to join.

However, football.london spoke with a member of the Arsenal first team squad on Monday evening who “had no idea” about the Super League and could not believe the potential ramifications being talked about by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, who suggested players could be banned from featuring at the World Cup and European Championships.

Manager Mikel Arteta was twice asked about the Super League in his post-match press conference after the 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday. The Spaniard said he “knew nothing” about it and football.london understands neither the manager or players were consulted at any stage of the process towards joining the competition.

Arteta will hold a pre-match press conference on Thursday morning ahead of Friday's Premier League match against Everton, where he's expected to field a host of questions about the move.
