Arsenal set new Aaron Ramsdale asking price but Edu can save millions on transfer alternative

Arsenal have been told to cough up more than £32million for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for the England man throughout the summer as they attempt to bolster their goalkeeping options.

Bernd Leno’s future at the Emirates Stadium remains uncertain, whilst Mat Ryan has departed following the expiry of his loan deal with Arsenal.

Sheffield United stopper Ramsdale has been talked up as one of the candidates to arrive, with West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone and Ajax keeper Andre Onana also reportedly under consideration.

However, it is set to be an expensive move to bring Ramsdale to the Emirates if reports are to be believed.

According to The Times, the Blades are asking for more than £32m to consider selling him this summer, despite the club having suffered relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The reason for that is that having signed for £18.5m from Bournemouth, the 23-year-old still has three years left to run on his current deal at Bramall Lane.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United also believe that they can charge that considerable amount due to his homegrown status and the fact that he was part of the England squad for Euro 2020.

Should Arsenal agree to pay the fee, Ramsdale would become the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history, eclipsing the reported £22m that they paid to Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of current number one Leno.

Meanwhile, Ramsdale is currently valued at just £10.8m by transfermarkt, meaning that the Gunners would be set to pay just over three times his current market valuation if they bring him to north London.

There could well be a viable solution to Arsenal not spending that amount of money on Ramsdale, though, and thus save Edu millions in the transfer market.

According to Mail Online, Arsenal's transfer chief is eyeing a free transfer swoop for former Fulham stopper Marcus Bettineli but faces competition from Chelsea and Aston Villa.
