Arsenal set Mikel Arteta sacking deadline as former Chelsea manager lined up

Mikel Arteta's 20-month stint as Arsenal boss has been a turbulent one to say the least.

The Spaniard has guided his side to back-to-back eighth-placed league finishes, a feat that has caused the Gunners to miss out on European football for the first time in 25 years.

And the north London club's fortunes have continued to falter so far this season, losing their Premier League opener against newly-promoted Brentford before enduring the same result against London rivals Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Now, Arteta is under considerable pressure to turn things around and The Telegraph have now claimed that the former Manchester City assistant coach has until the second international break in October to save his job.

The Gunners have five league fixtures before then, travelling to City, Burnley and Brighton whilst hosting north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur as well newly-promoted Norwich City in what could be make to break for Arteta, who claimed that narratives can change quickly following defeat to Thomas Tuchel's side.

"Hopefully things will get better", he said in his post-match press conference on Sunday evening.

"In the moment when the players are back – and they will need some time to get back still because they have lost a lot of football – things will be completely different.

"Hopefully we will see a different squad and a different level in the way we can play and hopefully different results. The story can change. The good thing is the narrative in football changes really quickly."

The aforementioned report also claims that former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is likely to be Arsenal's first choice to replace Arteta in the managerial hot-seat.

Conte is currently available after leaving Inter Milan back in May, although, the Gunners face the tough task of convincing the Italian to come to the Emirates given he rejected Spurs earlier this summer, admitting that the Lillywhites' project failed to convince him.
