Arsenal send message to Danny Welbeck after he scores against them for Watford

Arsenal have sent their commiserations to Danny Welbeck after the former Gunner was relegated with Watford.

The north London side saw off the hornets 3-2 in a game that visitors had to win to stand any chance of surviving.

Arsenal ran into a 3-0 lead before half-time before Watford scored twice to give themselves hope - the second coming through Welbeck.

The striker spent five years at the Emirates before being released by the club have been keen to remember one of their own.

"Once a Gunner..." they tweeted alongside a heart emoji with a picture of Welbeck being consoled by Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The Watford striker scored twice for the Hornets in 19 games having joined them on a free in the summer.

Early in the season the Vicarage Road outfit were in danger of being cut adrift after winning one of their first 17 league games.

But they mounted a fight back once Nigel Pearson arrived at the club and won back to back games against Norwich and Newcastle to take themselves out of the relegation zone.

Welbeck scored a spectacular winner against the Canaries but following a defeat at West ham Pearson was axed.

Captain Troy Deeney admitted after their loss at Arsenal that the change of managers hadn't helped as they dealt with the disappointment of relegation.

He told the BBC: "It’s not about today’s game, it’s a year of not being good enough. We can be frustrated with today but if we can’t defend as a team you’re going to lose more games than you win.

"But it’s worse for the fans and those who work at the club they’re the ones that might lose their jobs and it isn’t fair on them.

"The club from top to bottom will need to do an audit. Because sacking three managers in one season means we haven’t got it right. Something went wrong, is that managers, is that players is it ownership? We need to audit that and go through it all to see what went wrong."
