Arsenal send Gabriel Jesus for scan on hamstring injury as Mikel Arteta faces anxious wait

Gabriel Jesus will undergo a scan on Thursday as Arsenal seek to learn the extent of his hamstring injury.

The striker was forced off late in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League.

Jesus felt a tweak in his hamstring with nine minutes to go in the Group B clash at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium and went down before signalling to the bench that he had to come off.

The Brazilian said after the game that he was confident the injury was nothing serious but he is a doubt for Saturday’s game at home to bottom club Sheffield United in the Premier League.

Arsenal stayed in Spain overnight on Tuesday and did a recovery session there on Wednesday morning.

They then flew back to the UK in the afternoon, with the squad due to train on Thursday as normal.

Arsenal will be hoping that Jesus has not suffered a serious injury after he shone in Seville.

Jesus set up Gabriel Martinelli’s opening goal with a brilliant assist and then scored what turned out to be the winner with a stunning finish in the second half.

Speaking after the match, Jesus said: “I felt something. Let’s see. I did some tests with the physio. It looks not that big [an issue], but let’s see.

“I will have a scan, maybe tomorrow or the day after. Let’s see how it is, but I am pretty sure it will be nothing.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is due to hold his pre-Sheffield United press conferences on Friday, when he will provide an update on Jesus’ fitness.
