Arsenal second half player ratings: Reiss Nelson and Granit Xhaka seal Angers penalty win

Emiliano Martinez

Commanded his box well at times and on one occasion, hit it long over the top to Aubameyang. Nice to know Arsenal have an outlet like this. 6

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Still looks a more natural fit at right back than Chambers, even if only for his pace. Got up and down the wing well and was composed on the ball. 7

Shkodran Mustafi

An improved second half for the much-maligned German. Prevented former Arsenal midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide from going through on goal. Unsurprisingly he looked more comfortable alongside Sokratis than next to Zech Medley. 6

Sokratis Papastathopoulos

Is there much Medley can learn from playing next to Mustafi? Didn’t cover himself in glory for Angers’ goal either as he was caught flat-footed, even if the midfield failed to pressure the opposition. 5

Dominic Thompson

Made a promising contribution at left back, making a few decent challenges and tackles as well as getting forward. 6

Matteo Guendouzi

Had a key hand in Arsenal’s goal, putting the initial cross in that led to Reiss Nelson scoring. 7

Dani Ceballos Profile

Granit Xhaka

An experienced and measured performance from a man who Emery sees as one of his club captains. Tidy on the ball and showed nice distribution of passing. 7

Gabriel Martinelli

Looked lively again in the second half, it’s evident from the fact that Emery gave him 90 minutes tonight that he sees him as part of his plans for this season. He is an unknown quantity and that can be a good thing. 7

Reiss Nelson

Arrived in the box at the right time for his goal and did well with the finish, given how busy the area was. Had another chance to double his tally and probably should have done better, pulling his shot wide. 7

Joe Willock

Brought energy to the table when he came on, as he had done so well against Lyon on Sunday. With Mesut Ozil taking some time away from the playing squad, Willock has shone. 7

Eddie Nketiah

A peripheral figure who replaced by Aubameyang mid-way through the second half. 5

Arsenal substitutes

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (on for Guendouzi)

Saw a fair bit of the ball and was energetic alongside Aubameyang and Martinelli. 7

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (on for Nketiah)

As expected, the introduction of the Gabon striker had an immediate improvement on the Arsenal side. Linked up well with the English youngsters around him and probably should have scored himself. 7

Peter Olayinka (on for Nelson)

Coming on with just eight minutes to go, the 18-year-old didn’t have enough minutes to make an impact. 5
