Arsenal's transfer plan to give William Saliba the perfect reunion in 2020/21

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Saint-Etienne defender Wesley Fofana in the summer transfer window.

With uncertainty over the futures of Shkodran Mustafi and Pablo Mari only on loan until the end of the season, the Gunners could look to add another option to their backline.

And according to French outlet But! Football Club, via Sport Witness, one player who is on the Gunners' radar is Fofana, who has alerted clubs with his impressive performances in Ligue 1.

The report claims Everton are also interested in signing the 19-year-old, but the player is currently happy to stay at the French club for at least another season before leaving for England, after appreciating the faith shown by his coach Claude Puel.

Fofana's potential arrival at the Emirates would see the teenager reunited with William Saliba, who the teenager has played alongside during the current campaign.

Saliba remained at Saint-Etienne on a season-long loan deal after completing a move to Arsenal last summer.

But the Arsenal defender is set to return to north London earlier than expected after the rest of the Ligue 1 season was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Frenchman is a registered Saint-Etienne player until June 30, however, football.london understands the teenage defender will not be able to play for Arsenal until next season, even with the Premier League not set to resume until June.

Ahead of fixtures resuming, the Arsenal squad have stepped up training at their London Colney base. After voting unanimously to initiate phase one of Project Restart, all top flight clubs have started to hold training sessions in small groups.

Adhering to Government protocols, the Gunners must undergo regular testing for COVID-19 and keep a safe, two-metre distance from other players at all times.
