Arsenal's thinly-veiled dig at Liverpool over Premier League failure

Arsenal aimed a subtle dig at Premier League champions Liverpool when the two squared off at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

The Gunners came from behind to beat the Reds 2-1 thanks to goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson.

It was something of an unexpected result with Liverpool a cut above the rest of the league throughout the season.

But their reverse in north London was their third defeat of the season following losses at Watford and Manchester City.

It means Arsenal remain the only side to go through an entire Premier League campaign unbeaten - and therefore the only side with a unique gold trophy in their cabinet.

And a banner featuring the words "Is yours gold?" was on show at the Emirates.

The Gunners' win also means Liverpool can no longer break - or even match - Manchester City's points record that they set two years ago.

Pep Guardiola remains the only manager to lead a side to a 100 point season.

But after the contest Jurgen Klopp was coy about failing to match the record insisting it was hard to pick flaws in their season.

He said: "I cannot make any negative of something really positive, becoming champion, having so early in the season 93 points.

"I'm not the type of person who makes something negative of it because we cannot get the 100 or two points anymore.

"We get the points we deserve and we will see how many that will be.

"In the moment it's 93, two games to go, very difficult games, but two games to go and these boys played an exceptional season and nobody can take that away from them.

"But I'm not happy about the game, I'm the opposite, I'm disappointed, angry about a few things, but the game, the game was good and the attitude is good, but we took a break and that's not good and that's why we lost the game."
