Arsenal's summer transfer business slammed amid Joe Willock transfer decision

The additions of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and midfielder Martin Odegaard will not 'really improve' Arsenal.

That was the frank verdict of former Aston Villa and Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood who believes the Gunners should not have sold Joe Willock to Newcastle United.

The Gunners sealed the signings of former Sheffield United shot-stopper, Ramsdale, and ex-Real Madrid playmaker Odegaard this week, adding to the summer arrivals of Ben White from Brighton, Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht and Nuno Tavares from Sporting Lisbon.

However, they were comprehensively beaten by newly promoted Brentford on the opening weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign and Sherwood feels Mikel Arteta has failed to improve his side.

In fact, he was scathing in his criticism of the decision to allow Willock, who scored eight goals from midfield in a half-season loan spell with Newcastle last term, to leave the club on a permanent basis.

"No, I don’t think they really improve them," Sherwood told Sky Sports.

"You can ask the Arsenal fans out there and I’m sure they’ll tell you the same.

"They’re the biggest spenders so far this summer in the Premier League. Are they optimistic about the future of the club this season? The answer is no.

"They make these signings and year after year who are their best signings? Smith Rowe, Saka and the academy boys who are coming through.

"You look at Joe Willock who they’ve sold to Newcastle, a goalscoring midfielder should be still at the football club."
