Arsenal defender Rob Holding has reacted furiously to Remo Freuler's red card in the Switzerland versus Spain quarter-finals clash in Euro 2020.
Holding, 25, has expressed his disbelief on his Instagram story to the incident in the Saint-Petersburg Stadium that saw the Swiss taken down to ten men.
With the contest at the time being level at 1-1 the referee's red card decision changed the flow of the game.
Michael Oliver who is well known to fans of the Premier League was in charge of thegame, and the 36-year-old's red card decision in the 78th minute split opinion with fans on social media.
Swiss midfielder, Freuler committed to a 50/50 challenge with Spain's Gerard Moreno midway through the second half.
Despite clearly making contact with the ball, the English referee gave a red card to the Swiss man without any hesitation.
A decision which has angered many on social media, including Arsenal defender Holding who expressed his thoughts on his Instagram story.
The post on his instagram story read: "“Red card???! You can’t even tackle anymore. Games gone.”
You can understand from a defender's perspective why this decision would cause surprise amongst the footballing community.
Despite this, former Premier League official Peter Walton explained on ITV why he believed Oliver's decision was the right one.
Walton said: "Well you can see that the force behind the challenge area has really fallen into Michael Oliver's hand.
"And you can see there that his feet are above the ground, so is he in control of his body?
"Is he endangering the safety of his opponent?
"In my opinion, he is.
"VAR will check this, but Michael Oliver is spot on with his red card."
A verdict which will anger Holding and many defender's out there, but the new footballing laws have changed the landscape of what tackles are and aren't red card worthy.
The game ended in Spain winning 3-1 on penalties after neither team could add a second goal following the red card, demonstrating the huge impact the decision had on Switzerland's potential progression to the semi-finals stage of Euro 2020.
