Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can follow David Luiz in being exception to Chelsea's transfer rule

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has been linked with a move to Chelsea but he would need to follow in the footsteps of one of his current team-mates at Arsenal to make playing for the West Londoners a reality.

David Luiz is the only player over 30 in recent years to be given more than a one-year deal at Chelsea.

The club have a policy of only offering short-term contracts to older players, with an increased commitment to younger players who naturally have higher transfer value.

This is when we could see the summer transfer window open in England amid coronavirus pandemic

It is a large reason why Willian has not agreed a new deal. The Brazilian wants a longer-term extension and Chelsea have been unwilling to budge.

Which makes Aubameyang ending up at Stamford Bridge seem a little less likely.

Even though David Luiz is the sole exception to the rule, his contract was for two-years and when you consider that Aubameyang turns 31 in June, it seems inevitable that his next contract will be the last bumper one.

On that basis it would be a significant surprise if he was to settle for a two-year contract and there is unlikely to be a shortage of other suitors willing to offer more.

The Gabon international's current deal at Arsenal expires in June 2021 and he is keen to play Champions League football. A tipping point could arrive if Mikel Arteta's team fail to reach next season's competition.

He has scored 17 Premier League goals this season and provided one assist.

Declan Rice has also been linked with a move to Chelsea but the chances of the England midfielder returning to his former club in the next window seems remote.

It would take an exorbitant fee for the former Blue, who left the club in 2014, to leave West Ham.
