Arsenal's new director of football 'escalates' talks to make first summer signing

Arsenal's new director of football Richard Garlick has reportedly "escalated" talks over the signing of Norwich star Emiliano Buendia.

The Gunners have been linked with the Argentine, who recently received his first call up to the national team, for some time now.

Buendia added to the speculation with his recent comments that he wants to play for the biggest clubs possible and win titles.

"One always dreams of being at the highest level and in the best teams in England, Spain or Europe," he told AS .

"One dreams of playing for titles, it is an ambition that I have, it is a pride that important clubs are interested in you, it means that you are doing things well and it is a motivation to continue working and one day achieve it."

It is understood that Buendia will cost around £40m, with a sell-on fee set to go to his former club Getafe as part of the Canaries initial agreement to sign the midfielder.

And new Emirates chief Garlick is determined to make Buendia the club's first signing of the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Discussions are said to have "escalated quickly" in order for Norwich to avoid a long-running saga and be able to sign a replacement.

Aston Villa also have last year's Championship Player of the Season on their radar as an option if Jack Grealish is involved in a move to Manchester City.

Interest has been building in several of Norwich's top talents, including the likes of Todd Cantwell and Max Aarons, as well as Buendia.

And Norwich's director of football Stuart Webber admitted that it was possible that several players could go this summer, but only for the right price.

"If anyone wants any of those guys they are going to have to break our club transfer record (£25million) to even get me to answer the phone, to be honest. All three are aware of that," said Webber.

"One of them may go, maybe two or all three of them will go, who knows - but the facts are that this team isn't about one or two players.

"For us to be successful in the Premier League it's going to be how does the squad of 20 do, not if one player performs brilliantly."
