Liverpool began the new season with a disappointing Community Shield defeat against Arsenal on Saturday.
Takumi Minamino equalised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's earlier strike but Rhian Brewster was the only one to miss in the subsequent penalty shoot-out as the Reds went down 5-4 on spot kicks after a 1-1 draw.
The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side have now failed to win four of their eight games since being confirmed Premier League champions in late June.
But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes - and a bit more - at Wembley.
Milner's howl of anguish
With Jordan Henderson still absent, James Milner assumed the armband at the weekend.
The vice-captain was caught on camera cajoling the troops during the warm-up ahead of the match.
But no close-ups were required to pick up the scream of frustration Milner let out after directing an earlier header over the crossbar.
It was that loud, it could probably be heard back on Merseyside.
Van Dijk a headache
Milner wasn't the only player being vocal during the match, many of the on-pitch interactions audible inside an eerily empty Wembley.
As a strangely lethargic Liverpool stumbled through the opening exchanges, Virgil van Dijk had seen enough.
Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho were given both barrels from the Dutchman after losing possession in midfield.

Careful, Virg. You'd think after the cut above the eye in Salzburg that the centre-back had enough of a headache during the last week.
Martinez fails
Van Dijk became skipper after Milner was replaced on the hour, meaning he was involved in the toss to decide who took penalties first.
It meant having to put up with mouthy Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Martinez enquired as to whether the Reds defender had made the right choice, seemingly yapping: "You sure? Are you sure?"
Van Dijk simply ignored him.
Jones steps up
The Gunners keeper was giving it loads throughout the deciding penalty shoot-out, not least towards Curtis Jones.
Jones had netted the winner past Martinez in the League Cup last season, and clearly it hadn't been forgotten.
The Liverpool man nonchalantly tucked away his spot kick once again and then gave Martinez a withering response.
Jones later comforted and reassured Brewster after the striker's miss proved decisive - actions beyond his tender years.
