Arsenal's Leonie Maier gives fans a glimpse of future but Germany crash out of World Cup

Leonie Maier is Arsenal's newest acquisition and fans have had to be patient to see their new asset in action, as she has been on the fringes of Germany's World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old, who moves to north London after six years with Bayern Munich, did not feature in the group stages for her nation and was also on the sidelines for the Round of 16 victory against Nigeria.

However, Maier finally made her bow at the World Cup in France when she came off the bench for the injured Carolin Simon shortly before the half-time whistle.

The scores were level when the new Gunner took to the field, following goals from Lina Magull and Sofia Jakobsson, but the Swedes secured a surprise victory courtesy of Stina Blackstenius' effort minutes after the restart.

That sent Germany home from the tournament prematurely and limited what Arsenal fans will have seen from their new addition but she did give supporters a glimpse of what to expect.

Playing down the right side of defence, Maier played a few dangerous crosses into the area that invited her attacking teammates to provide a decisive connection but they were unable to do so.

Her effectiveness in the final third will be a boost to Arsenal ahead of their defence of the Women's Super League next season though and will be something that the likes of Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead can look forward to.

For now though, Maier will retreat for her summer holidays and could make her debut for Arsenal in next month's Emirates Cup against her former employers at the Emirates Stadium.
