Arsenal's Kieran Tierney self-isolating after Scotland team-mate Stuart Armstrong tests positive for coronavirus

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney is set to miss their trip to Manchester City having been placed in self-isolation while on international duty.

Scotland confirmed on Wednesday that Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong had returned a positive test for coronavirus, with Tierney, Ryan Christie and two backroom members of staff as close contacts who will all now need to isolate. All of the close contacts, along with the rest of the squad, have currently returned negative tests.

Tierney's absence would be a significant blow for the Gunners, the former Celtic man having become a key part of Mikel Arteta's backline. In a statement, the club said they were "seeking further advice and clarification of the details" of the case, having confirmed that Tierney had not broken any Covid protocols.

Tierney himself added: "I'm so disappointed and frustrated to be in this situation. I have adhered to all regulations and made sure I was socially distancing from my team mates in the hotel. I've also tested negative. I know Arsenal and the SFA are now in discussions with the Scottish authorities to gain a further understanding.

Scotland manager, Steve Clarke, said: “While this is obviously disappointing news the most important thing is the health and safety of the individuals involved and the wider group.

“As soon as we were informed of the positive test, the Chief Medical Consultant immediately contacted the Scottish Government’s clinical adviser, who in turn alerted the local Health Protection Team.

“We have informed the respective clubs from whom we have borrowed the players and backroom staff and we now have to prepare for a huge match ahead tomorrow.”
