Arsenal's incredible record over Man City that sums up an historic season for Mikel Arteta

Arsenal travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City in the re-arranged Premier League fixture on Wednesday night as they look to close the gap on the Champions League places.

The Gunners are in ninth place in the Premier League, eight points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea and five points away from Manchester United in fifth.

That means a win could see Mikel Arteta's team close the gap to within two points of fifth place going into the final nine games of the season.

And the Gunners go into the game full of confidence having won their last three Premier League games against Newcastle, Everton and West Ham United.

The same can't be said about Pep Guardiola's team, who will be looking to bounce back from a 2-0 loss in the Manchester derby where goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay condemned them to defeat.

The loss against the Red Devils was Man City's seventh of the season, one more than Arsenal have lost during the campaign so far.

Arteta's team have suffered six defeats in the Premier League this season, although they have also drawn 13 games compared to three games drawn by Man City.

The number of draws earned by Arsenal this season is just four off the record for a 38-game campaign.

Newcastle (2003/04), Aston Villa (2006/07 & 2011/2012) and Sunderland (2014/15) are the three teams that currently hold the record, having drawn 17 over a season.

That means that that should Arsenal draw five of their final nine game then they will take the record from the trio.

The Arsenal head coach spent the first half of the season as assistant manager at the Etihad and answered the question why his former team have lost so many games this season in his pre-match press conference.

"Sometimes small details make the difference," he said. "They've been very unlucky in some of the games, that's my opinion.

"I was there when we lost a few and we completely dominated the game and lost it in one or two details. This is football. It can happen."

The Arsenal boss said that his team will also go to try and add to that defeats column for their opponents.

"We're going to go there trying to beat them, put all the things we can on the pitch to make it difficult for them, to create the scenarios we want to do during the game," he added.

"Let's see if we turn up on the day at our best, we can perform and win the game."
