Arsenal's incredible comeback, Chelsea's frustration & Millwall sink Spurs - Women's football round up

Despite Chelsea's victory over Arsenal in the London derby last week, it will be the Gunners, not the Blues, representing London in this year's Continental Cup final.

Awaiting them in the final are holders Manchester City, who have won every game so far this season - including their 1-0 semi-final victory over Chelsea at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.

The Blues created the better chances against City but still looked well off the pace against the Women's Super League 1 leaders, who are fast becoming a real bogey team for Emma Hayes' side.

Fran Kirby had a goalbound shot blocked off the line from point blank range just moments before Nadia Nadim opened the scoring for the visitors.

Millie Bright very nearly struck late to level the scores but she could not keep her composure and will be left wondering how she directed her shot straight at the keeper from mere yards out, with the goal seemingly gaping.

Fortunes were different on the red side of London however, as Arsenal came back to conquer a tough Reading side.

Beth Mead's early opener for the Gunners was cancelled out instantly by Brooke Chaplen and the north Londoners looked to be heading out when Reading took the lead with 20 minutes to go.

But late strikes from Vivianne Miedema and then Jordan Nobbs confirmed a place in the final on March 11 for the four-time winners.

Arsenal and Man City are the only sides to have ever won the Continental Cup trophy, Arsenal playing in their sixth final in seven years of the competition. However both teams will face difficulties preparing for the final, as it comes just two days after the majority of the two squads return from the March international tournaments.

At least nine of Arsenal's starting line-up from the semi-final will be expecting call-ups, which includes players due to play in the SheBelieves Cup, hosted by the USA, in midweek.

The FA have been in discussions with the clubs about the possibility of the players involved in the final not going away with England at all, but no conclusion has been made, and there are still plenty of other players whose national teams will likely be less sympathetic.

The only WSL2 game of the weekend produced another entertaining London derby as the Millwall Lionesses comfortably dispatched Tottenham Hotspur 4-1. Charlie Devlin's double helped the Lionesses maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

In the Women's Premier League, Crystal Palace beat Gillingham 2-0 to consolidate second spot behind Charlton, who themselves had a successful weekend, making the League Cup quarter-final thanks to an extra time victory against C&K Basildon.
