Arsenal's hopes of Jerome Boateng transfer rated amid Manchester United and AC Milan links

Arsenal have emerged as the favourites to acquire Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich during the January transfer window.

Mikel Arteta is aiming to improve his squad this month after a tough season to date for the Gunners, with defence an area of focus for the side in particular.

Names such as Dayot Upamecano have been linked but Boateng is out-of-favour at Bayern and a potentially cheaper option.

This has led to rumours aplenty and the bookies are currently rating Arsenal as favourites to pull off a deal for the centre-back.

Mikel Arteta on January transfer window possibilities

The Gunners are down as 11/4 favourites with Ladbrokes, who are also pricing AC Milan at 10/3 and United at 16/1.

Boateng was once a regular for Bayern but has only featured nine times in the Bundesliga this season.

But former Arsenal star Kevin Campbell still believes his old side should sign the German.

"He was at Man City before and it didn't work out for him there but we do know that he is a very good player," Campbell told football.london on behalf of GentingBet last month.

"He is someone who not only has done well domestically in his career, but has starred on the international scene for Germany.

"He has been a leader and Arsenal don't have too many of them knocking about at the back.

"I'm sure Mikel Arteta will have done his homework on the player and found out if he is the right type of character for his side. I would certainly not second guess that move if it did come to fruition."
