Jonathan David has a wonderful chance to prove that he is ready for the Premier League after the round of 16 UEFA Champions League drew saw Lille against Chelsea.
Arsenal have been heavily linked to the young striker in order to solve an emerging striker crisis brewing at the north London club.
David has been performing excellently this season in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League, as he played a pivotal part in the club’s European knockout stage progression.
However, he has yet to play against a top Premier League side, but the ties against Chelsea will give Arsenal a great chance to evaluate the striker when he plays on the big stage.
At just 21-years-old, the Canadian international already has 11 goals in Ligue 1 games this season, which is the highest in a league that boasts the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
Despite his magnificent start to this season, the Gunners had already been tracking the striker, as according to The Athletic, Arsenal have been a long-time admirer of the young Canadian.
The two matches against Chelsea in the Round of 16 in the Champions League will be the perfect opportunity for the Gunners’ to see how David fares against one of the best teams in the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta’s side need for a striker has reached a critical stage and it was made even worse over the weekend, after the news that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had been punished due to disciplinary issues, which puts his Arsenal future in doubt.
What makes matters worse is that Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette’s contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, meaning they will have to be sold, or they can leave on a free transfer.
Folarin Balogun is also set to leave the club on a loan move in January according to reports, so Arsenal will be extremely short in the striker position.
