Carl Jenkinson is expected to seal a season-long loan return to West Ham United from Arsenal. The right-back, who was a part of the England squad at the European Under-21 Championship last month, has been chased by Southampton and Sunderland this summer.

But West Ham have held productive talks with Arsenal and there is now the confidence at both clubs that a deal will be concluded. Jenkinson, who has one full England cap, has fallen behind Héctor Bellerín and Mathieu Debuchy in the pecking order at Arsenal and his priority – and that of the manager, Arsène Wenger – is to get him regular football.

The 23-year-old started 29 Premier League games for West Ham last season and the club’s new manager, Slaven Bilic, is ready to bring him back as he continues his work on the squad. Jenkinson has three years to run on his Arsenal contract.

West Ham have already signed Dimitri Payet, Pedro Obiang and Darren Randolph while they have a clutch of other deals in the pipeline – including one for the Juventus centre-half, Angelo Ogbonna.
