Arsenal’s Ben White in line for England call-up as Gareth Southgate contends with injuries

Arsenal defender Ben White is in line to return to the England squad today as Gareth Southgate looks to replace the injured Harry Maguire, according to the latest reports.

England, who are also troubled by injury in attack, have problems at the back before resuming their World Cup qualifying campaign for Qatar 2022.

In the centre of defence, Manchester City’s John Stones is yet to play for Pep Guardiola’s team this season, whilst Maguire has been ruled out for a few weeks with a calf injury.

Meanwhile, Reece James is a doubt after twisting his ankle, and Ben Chilwell hasn’t had the easiest of starts to the new season as he’s struggled for game time as a result of Marcos Alonso playing well at Chelsea.

Now, as per the Guardian, Southgate is ready to recall White.

Arsenal’s £50million summer signing was part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 2020, but the 23-year-old missed last month’s internationals after he contracted coronavirus.

He is likely to be joined by England regulars Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady, whilst former Chelsea defender, Fikayo Tomori, who has been impressive for AC Milan this season, could also be included in the squad.

White has performed exceptionally well since coming back into the Gunners side after his enforced coronavirus absence in August, helping to keep two clean sheets out of three in the league alongside Brazilian star, Gabriel Magalhaes.

The two have formed an exciting new centre-back partnership as Mikel Arteta looks to reform Arsenal’s defence moving forward.

If White indeed does get called up, many observers will think it is well deserved.
