Arsenal's £146m mistake that shows they are worst of Premier League big six in transfer market

Arsenal have been praised for their productive 2021 summer transfer window.

Technical director Edu added six young players for a combined £140million, bringing in Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Nuno Tavares, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Martin Odegaard - all of whom have enjoyed a solid start to life at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners now have a squad rich with young talent that will only improve but they haven't always enjoyed such success in the transfer market.

In fact, they have often been synonymous with poor contract dealings, failing to tie down star players before they have left on the cheap, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez coming to mind.

BettingOdds.com has examined transfer activity from the so-called big six Premier League clubs between 2012 and 2019, investigating how successful each side has been when it comes to selling players for their market value.

The study concluded that Arsenal were the worst of the six when it came to selling players, accumulating £297.23million in sales during this period, a whopping £146.22million less than these players’ estimated value of £443.45million.

This means that the north London outfit received just 67% of what they could have expected to receive, a damning statistic that has contributed to their sharp decline in recent times.

Comparitevely, Liverpool have performed the best of the six clubs, selling players for a combined £505.24million, £33.27million more than their reported worth of £471.97million - giving the Reds an uptake of 7.0%.

The Gunners may be set for more disappointment when it comes to transfer windfall when it comes to strikers Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette, given the prolific duo are both into the final eight months of their respective contracts at the club.
