Arsenal reward Gabriel Martinelli with new contract after breakthrough season

Arsenal have rewarded Gabriel Martinelli with a new contract after an impressive debut season in English football.

The young Brazilian forward, 19, has signed an improved long-term deal at the Emirates.

Martinelli has scored 10 goals in 26 games for the Gunners since his arrival from Brazilian minnows Ituano last summer.

That deal proved to be an astute piece of business, and Arsenal chiefs had been keen to reward Martinelli for his rise to prominence.

It's believed he has signed until 2024, with the option of a fifth year.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “I am very happy that Gabi has signed a new contract with us.

"He is a very talented young player and he has impressed us with his performances, attitude and work-rate.

"We are looking forward to getting him back to full fitness and to watching his development at our club.”

Martinelli has been sidelined with a knee injury, but has recently been making his way back to full fitness.

His new deal is seen at the club as a deserved show of faith in the young prospect, who is set to have a big future in North London.

He is the second young star to pledge their long-term future to the club this week, after Bukayo Saka also signed a new deal.
