Arsenal reveal reason for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's absence against Everton

Arsenal have confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not play in their Premier League clash with Everton this afternoon.

The Gunners travel to Goodison in desperate need of a win after going over a month without victory in the league.

It was therefore a surprise that, when the team news was announced, their captain and leading goal scorer for the past two seasons was not involved at all.

The Gabon international scored his first goal at the Emirates this season during the Gunners' 1-1 draw with Southampton on Wednesday and would have been hoping to continue that form later on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal have now confirmed on their social media pages that Aubameyang misses the game with a tight calf. He has been replaced in the starting line up by summer signing Willian who will play on the left of a 3-4-3 formation.

Rob Holding is set to captain Mikel Arteta's side in the absence of Aubameyang. It is unclear as of yet how serious the injury is and how long the 31-year-old will be out for.

The full Arsenal team sees Bernd Leno start in goal with a back five of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Rob Holding, David Luiz, Kieran Tierney and Bukayo Saka.

In midfield Dani Ceballos and Mohamed Elneny continue in the absence of Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka, while there is a front three of Willian, Nicolas Pepe and Eddie Nketiah.

On the bench there is a return for Emile Smith Rowe, while Gabriel Martinelli is involved in the squad for the first time since March after recovering from a long term knee injury.
