Arsenal release statement after message mocking Tottenham appears on official club website

Arsenal and Tottenham have one of the fiercest rivalries in English football - but it is one that is now being thought online as well as on the pitch.

The Gunners came out on top in the only North London Derby of the season so far, winning 3-1 at the Emirates against Nuno Espirito Santo's side.

But Mikel Arteta and co. successfully had the return meeting postponed earlier this season after an outbreak of Covid-19 added to their injury problems, which was enough to convince the Premier League.

The fixture is yet to be rescheduled but fans will no doubt be waiting with bated breath for what will likely be a derby match under the lights at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Both clubs are chasing down a place in next season's Champions League and only goal difference separates them, Arsenal sat in sixth and Spurs in seventh.

But crucially, Antonio Conte's side boast a game in hand over their rivals.

They also remain in the hunt for silverware this season, which makes the Gunners' latest move a tad risky.

If you enter the online club shop, and click on your basket without adding anything to it, you will be met with a message that reads: "Your basket is as empty as Tottenham's trophy cabinet."

Once shared on social media, Arsenal fans largely reacted positively to the change, seeing it as some light-hearted but no-less funny banter from the Gunners.

@TKTeakser said: "Superb trolling from the Arsenal Direct team."

@Drew_wise217 said: "I had to check because I didn’t believe you. Can confirm it’s real. I love it here."

@MrJasonAlex said: "Hahaha great banter from the club."

@TSPNCalcio said: "These kind of gaffs are the best kind."

However, the club have since backtracked on the message, releasing a statement to Charles Watts of Goal, in which they said: "This was posted to the site in error without appropriate checks and approvals and is being removed as quickly as possible."
