Arsenal redundancy decision is 'morally an own goal' says Rangers legend Ally McCoist

Ally McCoist has criticised Arsenal after the English Premier League side announced they are proposing 55 redundancies.

The move comes as a result of the impact that COVID-19 has had on the club.

Arsenal, who won the FA Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley, are now entering the required 30-day consultation period on these proposals

McCoist is unimpressed, and told talkSPORT that "Morally, it's an own goal."

The Rangers legend said: "Morally it's a big own goal, no matter what way you look at it, and in my opinion I don't think you can defend it.

"You really can't. I think the majority of Arsenal supporters would agree with that.

"It's indefensible to think that, for example, that scout they were talking about, I don't know how long, let's just say for example somebody's been at a club for 30, 35 years, they are the fabric of the club.

"With the greatest respect, players come and go. Morally, guys, I think it's an own goal.

"I understand the dilemma, in particular (Mikel) Arteta. Things have started well for him. He'll want to strengthen his team, strengthen his squad.

"Whether it's bring Willian in, you've got to keep Aubameyang, I get that, but you tell me how that can be morally right if you're offering somebody perhaps another 100 grand a week and somebody that's maybe on, I don't know, 200 pound a week is getting the sack."
