Arsenal receive Thomas Partey transfer update with announcement imminent

Arsenal look set to experience a major blow in their push to sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid and will likely miss out on a move in the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen on bringing the Ghanian international to the Premier League when the transfer window opens, with Manchester United also said to be eyeing a move.

The 26-year-old's deal with the La Liga side has an affordable release clause of £42m, with has alerted other clubs ahead of a move, but Atletico are determined to fix that potential issue.

Sport states that Atletico expects Partey to agree to a new contract in the coming weeks, despite the ongoing interest from Premier League clubs including Arsenal.

A new deal is said to earn Partey a lucrative £4.1m-a-year but, crucially, will also see his release clause rise to a whopping £92m - a fee that will put off interested parties.

Such a fee would exceed the club-record figure that Arsenal paid Lille for Nicolas Pepe's services last summer and is the sort of figure would be unlikely to agree to.

Partey has been a mainstay in Atletico's side this season, playing in 35 out of 38 matches in all competitions for Diego Simeone's side in the 2019/20 season.
