Arsenal 'ready to activate release clause' of Roma defender Kostas Manolas

Arsenal are set to bolster their defence by signing Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The Gunners missed out on a top-four spot in the Premier League - finishing one point behind local rivals Tottenham - and must now beat Chelsea in the Europa League final to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Arsenal conceded 51 league goals this season and II Messaggero reports that Unai Emery is ready to trigger the player's £31 million release clause as he looks to add more defensive quality to his squad.

Despite being under contract at Roma until 2022, the Italian publication claims that Manolas will be allowed to leave in a cut-price deal if the club fail to finish in Serie A's top four.

The 27-year-old joined from Olympiacos in 2014 and has played over 200 times for the Giallorossi, helping them to last season's Champions League semi-finals.

Manolas has made 35 appearances for Roma this season in all competitions and has been previously linked with Arsenal's Premier League rivals Manchester United .

Claudio Ranieri's side are currently sixth in the table and trail fourth-placed Atalanta by three points with just two games of the league campaign remaining.

Roma have already confirmed that the Parma match will be Daniele De Rossi's final game for the club, with the midfielder set to leave the club after 18 years.

A graduate of the club's youth system, De Rossi has made 615 appearances since his first-team debut in 2001 - with only Francesco Totti managing more.
