Arsenal re-ignite Nabil Fekir transfer interest as Dani Ceballos replacement

Arsenal are set to revisit their interest in Real Betis playmaker Nabil Fekir as they seek a replacement for Dani Ceballos.

The Gunners acquired the Spanish midfielder in the summer on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid.

But Ceballos will return to the Bernabeu in the summer leaving the north Londoners light in midfield.

Fekir was previously of interest to the Gunners but they turned down the opportunity to sign him before he left Lyon last summer.

But after the 26-year-old registered seven goals and six assists in La Liga he has emerged as a target once again.

Fekir, who was part of France's World Cup winning campaign, was close to a move to Liverpool that summer before the transfer collapsed.

Mikel Arteta is set for a busy summer as he looks to mould his squad at the Emirates having taken charge mid-season.

No major decisions will be made on recruitment however until the coronavirus pandemic has passed and Arsenal know whether their budget will include income from European football.

Midfield is likely to be an area where the Spaniard looks to improve having also identified compatriot Carlos Soler at Valencia.

It had always looked as if Ceballos would head back to Los Blancos having requested that no option to buy was inserted into the initial agreement.

The 23-year-old also sought an early exit from the Emirates, although it was turned down by Arteta who insisted that the midfielder fight for his place.

“I had a conversation with Dani,” said the Arsenal boss in January. “When I joined the club he wasn’t here. He was in Madrid because he was doing his rehab for over a month with the team that owns him.

"He needs to get back to fitness and fight for his place like any other player."
