Arsenal provide injury update after Pablo Mari and Granit Xhaka limp off in Man City loss

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that centre-back Pablo Mari could be out for some time after the Spaniard was injured along with Granit Xhaka in the Gunners' 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday.

Xhaka was taken off on a stretcher after just six minutes after appearing to twist his ankle, and Mari limped off shortly afterwards with what appeared to be an achilles problem.

Arsenal face Brighton on Saturday, and it appears unlikely either player will be fit to feature against the Seagulls, but Arteta appeared more concerned about Mari's injury when speaking to the media after the game.

"They are getting assessed at the moment then we will know something more tomorrow morning," Arteta said. "Pablo's one didn't look very good to be fair."

It was a difficult night all round for Arsenal, as Mari's replacement, David Luiz, put in a nightmare performance during the heavy loss.

The Brazilian first failed to cut out Kevin de Bruyne's pass to Raheem Sterling which saw City take the lead, and he then conceded a penalty and was sent off when he brought down Riyad Mahrez in the box in the second half, with De Bruyne converting the spot-kick.

On Luiz, who has been linked with a move away from the club, Arteta added: "I don’t know what will happen with his contract. I know what happened today.

"I know the way David reacted because I know him well, not only as a player but a person as well. There was a reason why I didn’t select him from the start and he had to play because Pablo got injured.

"He’s always going to try and give you his best with the condition that he’s at and he’s tried again, but it didn’t work out for him or the team. That’s it."
