Arsenal predicted XI for Chelsea Boxing Day clash as star comes straight back into team

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang isn't certain to start Arsenal's Premier League clash with Chelsea as the club captain recovers from a calf problem.

Mikel Arteta is set to face a late decision over the availability of the skipper, who could start the game from the bench as the Gunners seek a result which could kickstart their season.

Gabriel Martinelli is a doubt too after the returning Brazilian injured his shin during the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City in midweek.

He could also be on the bench, while Granit Xhaka seems set to return to the starting XI after his three-game suspension.

Thomas Partey is still out, while Bernd Leno, Bukayo Saka and Kieran Tierney look certain to return after missing the City game.

Willian is set to face his old club, although former Arsenal star Paul Merson would like to see the Brazilian dropped from the side following recent poor form.

"He's the only one you can ask and again it must come down to confidence. I'm not sure he will play. He's had enough chances to play, more than the other younger players," Merson told Sky Sports.

"Arsenal's big-name players haven't been performing over the past six weeks or so and this is the problem Arteta has been having.

"[Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang scored the other day, but he's not really looked like scoring. His body language hasn't been great, Nicolas Pepe is not even starting all the time and Willian just looks like he's being carried."

The Gunners will start the game 15th in the table, with a win lifting them one place.

Predicted Arsenal XI: Leno, Holding, Gabriel, Tierney, Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Xhaka, Saka, Willian, Lacazette, Pepe.
