Arsenal predicted starting XI vs Burnley with Tierney and Saka rested as Ceballos returns

Many people would love the chance to be Arsenal manager, but going into Saturday's game against Burnley it's difficult to envy the difficult decisions facing Mikel Arteta.

At this stage of the season team selections are all about striking the perfect balance between squad freshness and morale.

With the trip Turf Moor preceding a North London Derby, sandwiched by two crucial Europa League round of 16 ties against Olympiacos, getting that delicate balance right is something of a game of chance.

Does Arteta stick and go with the side that served him so well against Leicester, knowing that he will have to drop most of them no matter how they play for the first leg in Athens, or does he twist and revert to his strongest possible line up available, but risk damaging the confidence of his fringe players?

Speaking ahead of the game Arteta admitted that these are kind of headaches that every manager dreams of.

"You need a large squad when you play in a lot of competitions, when you play in Europe and you need quality players," he said.

"Some of them that we already have, some that we are developing. Those players need competition but at the same time they need opportunities, but they need to deserve those opportunities.

"I think in recent months you have seen a lot of individuals increase their levels of performance and it is exactly what we want. That’s the problems, as managers, that we want."

One decision which should be relatively easy to make is in goal where Bernd Leno will undoubtedly continue, harsh as it may be on Mat Ryan, who is perhaps unlikely to get too many more opportunities between now and the end of the season at his boyhood club.

Into the back four though and that is where the tough decisions begin to stack up.

Pablo Mari has the right build and aerial threat to deal with the questions Burnley and in particular, Clarets striker Chris Wood pose, but the question remains over who to start alongside him.

Rob Holding is back fit after concussion, but David Luiz has been a revelation in recent weeks. There is no easy choice, although Holding seems like the one of the few defenders in Arsenal squad who will relish the challenge posed by Sean Dyche's side.

Things get even more complicated in the full back positions though where Kieran Tierney surely needs to be wrapped in cotton wool. But then if Arteta is to get the best out of Nicolas Pepe, who will likely start on the right? If Bukayo Saka is rested surely playing Cedric at right back is the better option?

He may have to accept the risk though and play Hector Bellerin at right back with Cedric on the left despite the Portuguese full back's better link up with the Gunners' club record signing.

Midfield poses more dilemmas as there is a need to get minutes into the legs of Thomas Partey ahead of the crucial trio of games after his latest injury. The fact though that Granit Xhaka will likely start all four matches means that Arteta will have a decision to make when it comes to choosing Dani Ceballos or the Ghanaian in the middle of the park.

With Partey's injury record it may just be wiser to go for the Spaniard, although that again is not an easy choice.

We have already established that Pepe will probably start on the right to protect Saka, and in order to protect another Hale Ender in Emile Smith Rowe, Martin Odegaard will probably start at number 10 as well.

Smith Rowe's injury that forced him off against Leicester is reportedly minor, but with such a packed schedule there is no need to risk him.

Over on the left, despite the continued #FreeMartinelli campaigns on social media it is likely that Willian will be given an opportunity to build on his form in the last two games, where he has doubled his assist tally for the entire season.

Up front Alex Lacazette will lead the line ahead of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in what will be one of the most difficult starting XIs Mikel Arteta has ever had to choose.

Arsenal predicted XI vs Burnley: Leno; Bellerin, Holding, Mari, Cedric; Ceballos, Xhaka; Pepe, Odegaard, Willian; Lacazette.
